After hearing from several Cutler Bay residents last week, Metro commissioners quashed a movement for the Pinecrest neighborhood to join Coral Gables.

The majority of the residents at the commission meeting said they would rather stay in Pinecrest. A petition circulated within the neighborhood that had begun the annexation process with Coral Gables.

“We’re pleased,” said Gary Matzner, a member of the Pinecrest charter committee. “Coral Gables is a great city, and for people to want to choose Pinecrest instead gives us great confidence.”

Also at the meeting, commissioners postponed setting a date for an election on the Pinecrest charter. The reason: language in the charter regarding Matheson Hammock Park, which will remain under county control. Commissioners instead will discuss the election date at a meeting Jan. 9. Charter committee members hope the election will take place March 12.

A final charter committee meeting takes place at 6:30 tonight at Bet Shira Congregation, 7500 SW 120th St.
