Southern boundary is moved north

The final boundaries of the proposed city of Pinecrest have been shortened from the south and expanded to the west.

The new boundaries are: Old Cutler Road on the east, Kendall Drive and the Snapper Creek Canal on the north, U.S. 1 on the west and to the south, Southwest 120th Street until 62nd Avenue and then down to Southwest 124th Street. Population is estimated at 15,000.

Gary Matzner, a member of the incorporation steering committee, said the boundaries were pulled in from the south because Palmetto residents want to be able to form their own city. At one point, the boundaries had extended south to Southwest 136th Street to include Palmetto and Pinecrest.

“It’s to accommodate the wishes of the residents of the Palmetto area who wish to have a right to self-determination,” Matzner said. “The new boundaries follow the school district of Pinecrest Elementary.”

The new limits — with the exception of the western edge, which was expanded — are the original Pinecrest incorporation boundaries, Matzner said.

The west side was extended to include those residents who worried they would be in a jurisdiction problem — left out of the proposals for Pinecrest, East Kendall and Palmetto South.

The next step in the incorporation process is for the Planning Advisory Board to make recommendations on the proposals at a meeting on May 31.

If approved, the incorporation proposals go before the Metro Commission to decide if an election should take place. Pinecrest incorporation supporters hope they’ll get to vote on the issue at an election this September.
